The Problem
One of the largest universal problems faced by the world today is figuring out how to balance man-made progress with the preservation of our natural resources. Though the question is being explored by many corporations, it has become a top interest for the open innovation team at a major multinational consumer goods company. The team wanted to expand its understanding of and knowledge on sustainability by getting in touch with professionals in other industries that might have insight on the potential for circular economies and overall sustainable practices. Though well connected in the consumer goods space, the team lacked significant experience or a large network in other sectors and needed guidance on where to find the right people to speak with as well as how to frame their broad-based challenge.

The Solution
After speaking with their Maven Account Manager, it was decided that the team would benefit most by conducting a Virtual ThinkTank on the topic of worldwide sustainability practices. Maven identified two dozen highly-qualified experts with proficiency across several sustainability-focused areas, including packaging, energy consumption, agriculture and economics. The Virtual ThinkTank format allowed the team the opportunity to participate in a robust conversation that helped them not only learn more about overall sustainability initiatives, but also brainstorm ways in which their company could partner with others to solve the problem on everyone’s mind.
